Get to Know James Taylor: GoCanvas’s New CEO

Get to Know James Taylor: GoCanvas’s New CEO

|

James Taylor: Thank you! It’s actually a fun story—I started out as a customer. We weren’t the typical GoCanvas user, but we white-labeled the technology into our solution to solve a key challenge: capturing data and translating it into government-regulated inspection forms. GoCanvas became our “easy button”—saving us time and helping us say yes to more customers.

The more I learned about the company, the more I was hooked. I’ve always loved tech, but what really excites me is technology that empowers the people who make, move, or manage the world we live in. GoCanvas is all about simplifying inspections and maximizing compliance for field workers—an impact that truly matters. That mission pulled me in, and I haven’t looked back since.

James Taylor: I’m incredibly excited to help shape the future of GoCanvas as we continue to grow, innovate, and make an even bigger impact on the industries we serve. AI has already transformed how office workers operate, but we’re at a pivotal moment where technology will do the same for field workers—making their jobs safer [and] more efficient, and giving them back time to focus on what really matters.

Beyond the tech, what truly energizes me is the people—the incredible teams at GoCanvas and SiteDocs. Having been part of the company for over a year, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication and talent behind these brands. Leading this team is both an honor and an opportunity to build something amazing together.

James Taylor: My immediate focus is on accelerating growth across all of our brands, including SiteDocs. SiteDocs is already a household name among safety professionals in Canada—now, it’s time to expand that reputation globally.

At GoCanvas, we have an incredible opportunity to further delight our customers by making our platform even simpler, more intuitive, and just as flexible as ever. That flexibility is what makes GoCanvas great, and we’re doubling down on it.

We’re also exploring ways to connect workflows between our users and those of Bluebeam and other Nemetschek brands, creating a more seamless experience across the entire ecosystem. The future is all about efficiency, connectivity, and putting powerful tools into the hands of field workers.

James Taylor: It’s hard to pinpoint just one mentor or role model—I’ve been fortunate to have several people shape the leader I am today.

One of the most influential experiences in my life actually started in childhood. From ages 3 to 13, I grew up in a cul-de-sac in Tucson, Arizona, surrounded by 18 other boys, all within three years of my age. For a decade, I found myself naturally leading this group—whether it was organizing sports or orchestrating whatever adventure we were into after school. Looking back, those years were my first lessons in leadership, organization, and conflict resolution—I like to think I got my Malcolm Gladwell “10,000 hours” in before middle school.

In my professional life, I’ve had the privilege of working with some incredible leaders. Early in my career at Honeywell, I learned a tremendous amount from Dave Cote, longtime CEO. He built a culture that knew how to win the quarter, win the year, and win in the market for years to come—a balance that left a lasting impression on me.

As a recovering finance guy, three leaders played a pivotal role in shifting my career trajectory:

  • Usman Shuja, currently build division leader and CEO of Bluebeam, in helping me learn how to win with partners and customers
  • Que Dallara, EVP and president of diabetes at Medtronic, in helping me develop strategic thinking and [learn] how to run a business
  • Sameer Agrawal, currently CEO of Orbcomm, in helping me think bigger about new markets and new ways to grow

I met Usman Shuja, Que Dallara, and Sameer Agrawal during my time at Honeywell. Their encouragement and belief in me helped accelerate my career beyond finance and into broader leadership roles. I’m incredibly grateful for their impact—along with the many other leaders I’ve had the privilege of working with over the years.

James Taylor: I’m incredibly lucky to have a supportive and fun family that keeps life exciting. My wife and I have been together since high school, and we spent our 20s seeing as much of the world as possible before starting a family.

Now, we have two amazing (and very busy) kids. Our 4-year-old daughter is already a future CEO—she runs our house with impressive authority. Meanwhile, our 18-month-old son is testing the limits of both our home’s structural integrity (bouncing off walls) and its artistic potential (coloring on them). They keep us on our toes, to say the least.

True to our GoCanvas end users, I love a good home improvement project. I recently wrapped up a basement bathroom remodel and built a treehouse in the backyard—both of which, thankfully, are holding up.

James Taylor: First and foremost, thank you to our customers and partners for your trust and support. GoCanvas has built its reputation on innovation, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the people we serve, and I’m excited to continue that legacy.

As we move forward, my focus is on making sure we keep delivering smarter, simpler, and more powerful solutions that help field teams do their best work. And I’d love to hear from you! What can we do better? What do you want more of? Let’s keep the conversation going—your feedback helps shape the future of GoCanvas.

We’ve given the back office a simple, yet powerful, new way to monitor all of the work that’s in progress. It’s now easier to plan ahead and schedule the right people for the project – and, just as importantly, react effectively when plans need to change. One of the other standout features is our advanced analytics capabilities, which empower users to derive actionable insights from their data like never before. Additionally, the platform now supports richer data capture options, including photos and videos, making it more versatile than ever. Overall, GoCanvas is designed to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and provide users with the tools they need to succeed in today’s digital landscape.

With features like advanced analytics and customizable dashboards, GoCanvas enables data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency. Ultimately, it sets a new standard for business technology, fostering agility and innovation in an increasingly digital landscape.

Q: Brent, what were some of the challenges faced during the development of the latest release, and how were they addressed?

Brent: Developing the latest release was indeed a complex process, but our team was up to the challenge. One of the main hurdles we faced was ensuring seamless integration with existing systems used by our clients. This required extensive testing and collaboration with our customers to ensure compatibility and interoperability. Additionally, incorporating user feedback while maintaining the release timeline was another significant challenge. However, through innovative solutions and a relentless commitment to quality, we were able to overcome these obstacles and deliver a product that exceeds expectations.

With GoCanvas, we received inspection information within seconds, reducing our 10-14-day turnaround to 72 hours.

Q: Viyas, what are your expectations for the adoption of the latest update, and how do you see it evolving in the future?

Q: Brent, can you provide insights into how GoCanvas addresses compliance and security concerns for businesses?

Brent: Compliance and security are top priorities for us, and our latest release reflects that commitment. We’ve implemented robust security protocols to safeguard sensitive data and ensure compliance with industry regulations. From encryption to access controls, every aspect of the platform is designed with security in mind. Additionally, our team works closely with regulatory bodies to stay ahead of emerging compliance requirements and adapt our platform accordingly. With GoCanvas, businesses can trust that their data is secure and compliant, allowing them to focus on their core operations without worrying about potential risks.

Q: Viyas, what is Job Site Management, and why is GoCanvas pivoting towards it?

Viyas: Job Site Management (JSM) involves streamlining day-to-day operations of frontline workers with back-office tasks, enhancing scheduling, planning, time management, quality assurance, invoicing, and reporting. GoCanvas is shifting towards JSM to help blue-collar industries succeed beyond just forms, focusing on connecting frontline operations with the back office for improved efficiency.

GoCanvas aims to tackle these challenges by providing real-time collaboration, data insights, and streamlined project management, ensuring work is delivered on time, on budget, and at a high quality.

Q: Viyas, any final thoughts on the latest release and its potential impact on the business landscape?

5 Reasons Why I Use GoCanvas Mobile Apps in my Safety Business

5 Reasons Why I Use GoCanvas Mobile Apps in my Safety Business

|

I’ve worked in the safety & health field for the better of 20 years, inspecting thousands of job sites and facilities. I, like most people, used a clipboard and notepad. I’d walk around writing down what I found.

When I started in safety, this was the only way to do it. We’d then have to regurgitate all the data into something others could understand and act upon. As you can guess: it was very, very time-consuming. I would spend almost twice as much time creating the reports as I did conducting the inspection.

Now, I still conduct inspections frequently, as do my staff. We’ve ditched the clipboard and pens: We all use our smartphones or tablets. Prior to finding GoCanvas, we were already using electronic devices. Basically, it was an electronic clipboard and pad of paper. This method still required a lot of additional work back at the office, but at least some of the work was cut and pasted.

Inspections happen in the field, away from the office. Before, I would write out all my notes in the field, go back to the office, type out all the notes again, download pictures and try to match each picture to the finding. It was slow, painful, and inefficient.

Using GoCanvas. I type out my notes, take the picture in the app, load GPS coordinates and email it to myself. If anyone else needs to see it immediately,  they can be added to the distribution list. Do it once, finish it out in the field, and easily find the submission later.

Inspections can be sent to whomever, once complete. This is great, especially if I have a finding that creates an imminent risk to life or health and needs immediate attention. After the inspection is complete, I can go back to the office to edit/modify/clarify the text, add regulator references or company standards that apply to the finding. Then, I send it out to the people responsible for correcting the issue or for review.

Since it’s done once, operations have become more productive. With all the details and pictures automatically grouped together in the finding, people can find the location and easily identify what needs to be corrected.

I don’t have to go out to the location again and point to the deficiency. I don’t have to worry about mismatched photos or unreadable text. We save time by preventing these common misunderstandings and mistakes. GoCanvas makes the work go more smoothly.

With GoCanvas API web services, integrating submissions with existing systems becomes instantaneous. All the inspections are downloaded to my database for tracking.  No additional inputting of inspection data. Just a few clicks and the information is downloaded. I can see what inspections have been conducted, who conducted them, where they were conducted and what the findings were.

GoCanvas makes it easy to track inspection findings from beginning to end. Plug this information into an executive dashboard and management can see all this too. This easy access increases accountability. Better accountability increases compliance and in turn, a safer work environment.

From my database, I can then create reports for management. It’s easy to track and trend the findings. I can pull out pieces of the inspections to create safety bulletins to share with other sites, clients, or departments.

Using mobile apps has saved my organization much time and in turn, saved me a lot of money. It helped my customers as well. I deliver a better product at a better rate. As an efficient and effective organization, my customers tell more people about my work growing my business.

Investing in Our Future, Faster

Investing in Our Future, Faster

You may have heard, since it was covered here, here, and oh yeah, here, that GoCanvas recently received a round of investment funding from K1, an experienced investor in B2B SaaS organizations.

What exactly does this mean…? That we can Do More.

Very simply this means we can now Do More — Do More for our subscribers, our partners, and our dedicated and growing GoCanvas team. Our commitment to these critical communities remains unchanged; the relationship with K1 means we can serve each of these groups more fully and innovatively. This partnership enables us to continue to pursue our big ideas — ideas that we’ve gotten from listening to you.

In other words, K1’s investment will help us get to the future faster.

Here is what is staying the same… the things that are most important:

  • Our wildly passionate focus on culture
  • Our team members and leadership – including myself as CEO
  • Our ability to all be owners
  • Our ability to build on the GoCanvas brand globally

Why K1…? Hint it was more than money.

The decision to partner with K1 was based on more than just a source of capital. First and foremost, we saw a deep cultural alignment between GoCanvas and K1. They believe what we believe, and we both understand the fundamental role culture plays in a business’s success. Plus, they have a reputation as a value-added partner with deep experience in helping to grow B2B software companies!

Why now…? Because we have more Big Ideas

Quite simply we want to continue to drive toward being at the heart of solving many of our customer’s bigger problems and helping them with their biggest opportunities for growth. We are convinced that if we help our customers more dynamically collect and share data it will benefit how they connect with their own customers and enable them to improve their businesses. Solving these problems and answering these opportunities means a deeper investment into our Product First philosophy, and investing in sharing our brand and story in more places.

Here’s the sales pitch…  Come join the team!

As part of this new chapter, we plan to double the GoCanvas team over the next year or so while staying put right here in Reston, Virginia. To that end, I encourage anyone interested in working in an award-winning culture, for a rapidly expanding tech company in the greater Washington, D.C. area (no, not Amazon) to check out our

Bottom Line: We are excited and hope you are too.

But if you do have any lingering questions, please do not hesitate to reach out directly to me at jq@gocanvas.com. I would love to hear from you.
