Get to Know James Taylor: GoCanvas’s New CEO

Get to Know James Taylor: GoCanvas’s New CEO

|

James Taylor: Thank you! It’s actually a fun story—I started out as a customer. We weren’t the typical GoCanvas user, but we white-labeled the technology into our solution to solve a key challenge: capturing data and translating it into government-regulated inspection forms. GoCanvas became our “easy button”—saving us time and helping us say yes to more customers.

The more I learned about the company, the more I was hooked. I’ve always loved tech, but what really excites me is technology that empowers the people who make, move, or manage the world we live in. GoCanvas is all about simplifying inspections and maximizing compliance for field workers—an impact that truly matters. That mission pulled me in, and I haven’t looked back since.

James Taylor: I’m incredibly excited to help shape the future of GoCanvas as we continue to grow, innovate, and make an even bigger impact on the industries we serve. AI has already transformed how office workers operate, but we’re at a pivotal moment where technology will do the same for field workers—making their jobs safer [and] more efficient, and giving them back time to focus on what really matters.

Beyond the tech, what truly energizes me is the people—the incredible teams at GoCanvas and SiteDocs. Having been part of the company for over a year, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication and talent behind these brands. Leading this team is both an honor and an opportunity to build something amazing together.

James Taylor: My immediate focus is on accelerating growth across all of our brands, including SiteDocs. SiteDocs is already a household name among safety professionals in Canada—now, it’s time to expand that reputation globally.

At GoCanvas, we have an incredible opportunity to further delight our customers by making our platform even simpler, more intuitive, and just as flexible as ever. That flexibility is what makes GoCanvas great, and we’re doubling down on it.

We’re also exploring ways to connect workflows between our users and those of Bluebeam and other Nemetschek brands, creating a more seamless experience across the entire ecosystem. The future is all about efficiency, connectivity, and putting powerful tools into the hands of field workers.

James Taylor: It’s hard to pinpoint just one mentor or role model—I’ve been fortunate to have several people shape the leader I am today.

One of the most influential experiences in my life actually started in childhood. From ages 3 to 13, I grew up in a cul-de-sac in Tucson, Arizona, surrounded by 18 other boys, all within three years of my age. For a decade, I found myself naturally leading this group—whether it was organizing sports or orchestrating whatever adventure we were into after school. Looking back, those years were my first lessons in leadership, organization, and conflict resolution—I like to think I got my Malcolm Gladwell “10,000 hours” in before middle school.

In my professional life, I’ve had the privilege of working with some incredible leaders. Early in my career at Honeywell, I learned a tremendous amount from Dave Cote, longtime CEO. He built a culture that knew how to win the quarter, win the year, and win in the market for years to come—a balance that left a lasting impression on me.

As a recovering finance guy, three leaders played a pivotal role in shifting my career trajectory:

  • Usman Shuja, currently build division leader and CEO of Bluebeam, in helping me learn how to win with partners and customers
  • Que Dallara, EVP and president of diabetes at Medtronic, in helping me develop strategic thinking and [learn] how to run a business
  • Sameer Agrawal, currently CEO of Orbcomm, in helping me think bigger about new markets and new ways to grow

I met Usman Shuja, Que Dallara, and Sameer Agrawal during my time at Honeywell. Their encouragement and belief in me helped accelerate my career beyond finance and into broader leadership roles. I’m incredibly grateful for their impact—along with the many other leaders I’ve had the privilege of working with over the years.

James Taylor: I’m incredibly lucky to have a supportive and fun family that keeps life exciting. My wife and I have been together since high school, and we spent our 20s seeing as much of the world as possible before starting a family.

Now, we have two amazing (and very busy) kids. Our 4-year-old daughter is already a future CEO—she runs our house with impressive authority. Meanwhile, our 18-month-old son is testing the limits of both our home’s structural integrity (bouncing off walls) and its artistic potential (coloring on them). They keep us on our toes, to say the least.

True to our GoCanvas end users, I love a good home improvement project. I recently wrapped up a basement bathroom remodel and built a treehouse in the backyard—both of which, thankfully, are holding up.

James Taylor: First and foremost, thank you to our customers and partners for your trust and support. GoCanvas has built its reputation on innovation, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the people we serve, and I’m excited to continue that legacy.

As we move forward, my focus is on making sure we keep delivering smarter, simpler, and more powerful solutions that help field teams do their best work. And I’d love to hear from you! What can we do better? What do you want more of? Let’s keep the conversation going—your feedback helps shape the future of GoCanvas.

Release Notes: API Keys

Release Notes: API Keys

We’ve added the ability to generate unique API keys for authenticating the GoCanvas API. By default, the API accepts the username and password of an authorized GoCanvas user as required parameters. We’ve added a second option to generate a unique API Key that can be used to access the API instead of logging in with your username and password. These will allow other systems to access your account without giving out your username and password. Click here to read more about how it works.

Note: At this time, you are unable to use API Keys for authentication and use Business Insights and/or Zapier integrations on your account.

Release Notes: required checkboxes, new iOS and Android features including 7-day view of Dispatches, Square enhancements, and more

Release Notes: required checkboxes, new iOS and Android features including 7-day view of Dispatches, Square enhancements, and more

Hello all! We have just released new versions of the GoCanvas mobile app for both Android and Apple devices. This release features updates that we think you’re going to love, so keep reading to see what’s new! Our focus this time around was making it easier to see the information you need. Thank you, as always, for your feedback on how we can make your experience using GoCanvas more powerful.

You’ve asked for the ability to make a Checkbox field required just like your other field types, so we’ve added the ability to do just that. Use this feature to prevent moving onto the next screen without a checked box, like when you need someone to check that they have read and agree your Terms and Conditions.

When a Handoff is assigned to you, you can now see who handed it off — meaning you don’t have to hunt for it in the App or on the GoCanvas website anymore!

If your Submission has a Submission Name, it will now be visible on the Workflow screen. This should help provide better context around what you’ve just been assigned.

Dispatch users will be happy to know that with this update, users can see their upcoming dispatches up to seven days out from the current date. Having access to this information ahead of time can make it easier to plan out routes, tools needed for the job, and mental preparation.

  • Future Dispatches can only be viewed, and not filled out ahead of time
  • This feature is turned off by default — contact support to turn it on for you
  • Not currently suggested for accounts sending 100+ dispatches to their users at once

We’ve made it easier to reconcile your transactions in Square by bringing in the Submission ID (the unique ID in the footer of your PDF) as a note on the transaction.

This update to the iOS mobile app reflects the existing functionality that the Android mobile app already has. A small but convenient change — when entering content into a Number field, your number keyboard will pop up instead of your full keyboard.

GoCanvas Now Accepts Square Mobile Payments

GoCanvas Now Accepts Square Mobile Payments

GoCanvas and Square now make it easier to get paid faster.  GoCanvas Admins and Designers can now easily drag-and-drop a Payments field into any GoCanvas form to allow your staff to accept credit card payments onsite, using the popular Square mobile payments service. With any GoCanvas form capable of accepting Square, the integration between your business and finance operation can now be more streamlined than ever before.  Of course, if you don’t already have a Square account, you can register for Square from within the GoCanvas App Builder.  Here’s a link to help you set up Square in GoCanvas.

Getting paid faster and reducing bad debt by ensuring payment before your employees leave the worksite might just be reason enough to update your GoCanvas forms to include Square.  GoCanvas customers asked for Square by name, which is not surprising considering all of the paperwork that can be eliminated with this new payment option.

New Square users are eligible for a free Square magstripe reader (headset jack or Lightning connector versions). Another benefit is that you can permanently link payments collected via Square directly to your customers’ unique projects captured in GoCanvas. So, not only are your employees off the hook for filling out paper-based estimates, invoices, and other work documents, they are freed of having to connect a customer’s check or cash payment to the corresponding paperwork — a headache that occurs sometimes months after the actual work product is delivered.

Interested in learning a bit more?  Check out this , we think you’ll find it self-explanatory.

Wait! What? We had you at “…make it easier to get paid faster?”

New Release: Redesigned App Builder, Page Numbers in the PDF Designer and More

New Release: Redesigned App Builder, Page Numbers in the PDF Designer and More

We have some pretty dramatic updates to the GoCanvas product with this release.  I know you will all be very excited about them.  I also want to prepare you for a 2019 that will blow your socks off.  Let’s dig in!

For those of you that attended our Users Conference we talked about some exciting enhancements to the GoCanvas product in 2019.  This particular release will gives us a good segue into one of the more exciting changes coming to GoCanvas.

We are really doubling down on improving the usability or “user experience” of our product.  You will see some incredible changes to the App Builder with this release.  But we are just getting started.  In recent months we have hired a number of new team members that will help us.  We hired a User Experience Researcher that focuses exclusively on getting feedback from GoCanvas users and non-GoCanvas users about potential changes to how our product works.  Virtually everything that we change on our website will be tested extensively first.  Our designers will then re-work their designs and they will be tested again. Her name is Stephanie Pratt and some of you have worked with her already or met her at Transform 2018 back in October.  If you hear from Stephanie or see a survey pop-up on our website then your chance to influence our product has arrived.  Please take advantage of it!

We have also hired a Sr. Director of User Experience.  She is 100% focused on User Experience.  Her name is Emily Ryan.  The only thing she cares about is YOU and your ability to discover and use GoCanvas.  The designers on our team work for her and they will be working diligently to make GoCanvas more usable.  In fact, there is a room at our office now with a print out of every single page on our website. EVERYTHING is being scrutinized by Emily and her team. Her team consists of team members that have been with GoCanvas for years and years, too. So there is a good mix of fresh eyes and an understanding of our customers.

We are also going to be exploring other areas where we can help you with the challenges you face in operating your business. Whether those are internal operational challenges or challenges in working with your customers, we want our platform to assist you in DOING MORE.

One of those challenges we are actively working on is your ability to analyze the data you collect with GoCanvas. You may not be ready to do this today, but down the road our hope has always been that you will learn things about your business that you were previously not able to when collecting data on paper. We will be launching GoCanvas Analytics this year. It will allow you to create reports and visualize your data via dashboards that will allow you to make better (and much faster!) decisions. It will give you insights into your business that will allow you to grow and expand.

If you are interested in learning more about GoCanvas Analytics and want to be kept up to date on our progress, please click below to sign-up for email updates. And when we are ready to put this in the hands of customers you’ll be the first people we reach out to.

Now let’s get to the new stuff!

We think you’ll really like the new look and some of the changes we made. Overall, we obviously made a lot of changes to how things look. Some are subtle so I won’t point them all out.

  • Fields – We put the fields into groupings to make them easier to find.
  • App Name – You can now name your app on the device in the workspace. I, for one, always have clicked on that to edit or name my App!  This will save me clicks for sure!

We also made changes to how our Reference Data controls looks inside the App Builder. It is a slight change but we think it is a lot cleaner now.

We also made more changes to the flow when you publish a GoCanvas App.  You will assign to Groups and Users on separate screens now. And at the end you will get this screen below giving you options to navigate to wherever you want to go after publishing.

You can navigate directly to your App Settings, close the App Builder or keep editing your App.

We also changed the language for our PDF Visible and Web Visible settings.  These are really powerful settings but we felt like they were not named in a way that would make sense to most folks.

Wait for it….

We have added PAGE NUMBERING!  I know…I know… I can hardly control my excitement, too.  You can enable it by going to the Global Settings area. The page number will appear in the lower right hand corner of your PDF.

Release Notes: Reference Data with Dispatch and More!

Release Notes: Reference Data with Dispatch and More!

You can now use Reference Data when creating a dispatch from Workflow & Dispatch page!  We know users of our Dispatch service will be dancing at their desks with this update.

This new feature will work the way you might expect it to.  Your Drop Down fields that are mapped to Reference Data will now show those choices when creating a dispatch through the web interface.  Any dependent fields will auto-populate after making your choice, too. This will work on Loop screens, too.

When I choose “Jane Doe” then subsequent fields auto-populate as expected!

We recently redesigned our App Settings pages.  We added the ability to see if a feature is turned on or off and we added toggle switches to turn a feature on or off if there are no additional settings for that feature. We hope this helps you quickly determine what features you are using for each of your GoCanvas Apps.

We have changed the name of our “Customize” area to “Account Settings”. This makes a lot more sense and will be easier for new customers to understand what they will find on this page.  We have also redesigned this page to match what we did on the “App Settings” pages.

The Account Settings page now has the same design as our App Settings pages.  You can easily see what settings are in use (On or Off). And we have added toggle switches for any settings that just need to be turned on and off and have no other settings associated with them.

Release Notes: API, Dispatch Calendar and Reference Data Updates

Release Notes: API, Dispatch Calendar and Reference Data Updates

We have added some goodies in this release that our amazing customers have asked for in the past.  Please take the time to read about this update (and others!) so you can optimize your use of our platform whenever you can to streamline your processes even more.

We now make available the information about each dispatch that you have access to via the website.  When logged into our site you see the following information available to you about each dispatch:

The ID, Name, Description, User, App Name, Status, Creation Date, Completion Date and Scheduled At information can now be pulled down with the API. This allows you to do analysis on your dispatches or place the data in another system to help you manage your jobs. You can also include the data your user filled out, too.

This same data has been available for export manually for a little while now under the “Export Dispatches” area of the Dispatch page. You can export some of this data manually if you want to get a feel for the data available now via the API.

Customers using our Dispatch Calendar to schedule jobs and send jobs out on a scheduled date and time have wanted to be able to assign, unassign and reassign dispatches via the calendar.  Now you can do it!

In this example the dispatch is unassigned and I am assigning it to Mr. Michael Jordan.

In this example I am going to unassign this dispatch from Mr. Lebron James. He has a playoff game that day and can’t make this appointment!

If you have not tried our Dispatch Calendar, please learn more here.  If your plan doesn’t include our Dispatch Calendar then please submit a ticket and we can reach out to discuss with you.

We have made it much easier to create what we call “dependent reference data” configurations. You might think of this as “filtering” data with dropdown fields so your users can quickly find the values they need from reference data files. Here is a sample price list file to illustrate this functionality.

The first column has duplicate values in it because your price list has multiple items from the same manufacturers. What you want your user to do is choose a manufacturer from a dropdown field and then choose a model based on the manufacturer you picked in a subsequent dropdown field. So if your user chooses “Trane” then she would only see the models by Trane in the second dropdown.

We have set the default to AUTOMATICALLY remove duplicates assuming most customers don’t want duplicates. If you need the duplicates just check the “Show Duplicates” box. The checkbox only appears when you have mapped a dropdown field to a reference data column that contains duplicates.

To learn more about dependent reference data, please visit this help topic.  The reason for adding this feature is so you do NOT have to use a second reference data file anymore.

We did more work on our upcoming enhancement to our submission search capability. This will make finding submissions much faster. If you want to be part our beta testing program for this, please send an email to feedback@gocanvas.com.  We will reply, add you to the list and then let you know when we’re ready.

Release Notes: GoCanvas Windows App

At the very end of 2015 we made a strategic decision to support 3 platforms for filling out GoCanvas apps.  Android, iOS and the Windows operating system. We decided to NOT support Windows Phone and Blackberry any longer.  Our goal with these 3 platforms is very simple: To 100% support them. This means that all GoCanvas features (Unless not applicable) would be available across them and the design of the interface would be simple and easy to use.

We are now happy to announce that our GoCanvas Windows App is now available!

You can install this version of GoCanvas on any laptop/desktop/tablet that is running Windows 7, 8 or 10. For those of you that have been using the GoCanvas Desktop Client, this will be a massive improvement for you.  There are tons of new features availabe on this version that were previously only available on iOS or Android. Here they are!

Release Notes: New Functionality for the App Builder & PDF Designer

Release Notes: New Functionality for the App Builder & PDF Designer

I’m not even sure where to start with this release! There are a lot of new things along with some enhancements to the user interface in our App Builder and PDF Designer in the spirit of making them easier to use. A number of these changes were done to make the controls inside the App Builder identical to the controls inside the PDF Designer so there is familiarity between the two tools.

I’m sure you’re more interested in the brand new stuff, so let’s start there.

We added a number of new things to help you save even more time using GoCanvas!

Now you can make a barcode field “Read Only”. This might be a misnomer, but what this allows you to do is force your user to use the camera and actually scan a barcode. They are not able to manually type in whatever value they want. Customers have wanted to ensure that their mobile users are actually scanning a barcode and this will do the trick.

Our “Grid” functionality is an alternative way for your mobile user to use a “Loop” or “List” screen. Now you can see what that Grid will look like on mobile inside the App Builder. One thing to note is that you cannot edit when viewing the Grid. It just shows you a preview so you can see how things will look for your mobile user.

***NOTE***: Grid functionality must be enabled for you by our team here at GoCanvas. If you want it turned on, please email us at support@gocanvas.com. We are happy to enable it for your account.

One thing that can be rather painful is not knowing which screens and fields are set to be conditional. We have added some icons so you can easily identify them now. This will save you a lot of time when building and editing your GoCanvas Apps!

Here is how a conditional screen will be identified…

Here is how a conditional field will be identified…

For years and years we have provided the ability to make a field on the mobile device “invisible”. This is used for all kinds of reasons like triggering conditional screens or fields or hiding calculations from mobile users because they don’t need to see them and much more.

The challenge was then knowing which fields were invisible when working inside the App Builder. Problem solved!

We have added a dotted line around a field that is invisible.

The name of this setting was changed to “Mobile Visible”, too. We wanted to clarify that this setting impacted the field on the mobile device only. You can always see it in the App Builder so you can edit it.

We continue to add functionality to our PDF Designer so it is faster to create beautiful PDFs and so you have functionality that makes the PDF more engaging for your audience.

We really want to encourage you to use your customer-facing documents as additional marketing tools. Encourage your customers to connect with you on Facebook, review your services on Angie’s List (Or Google or Yelp), follow you on Twitter and more. I know this might be new to many of you, but you will grow your business doing this.

Outside of that you can link people to your website, of course. Or link them to specific pages on your site to provide additional information outside of what is in the PDF.

  1. New social icons: We added Angie’s List, Google Reviews, Home Advisor, and Yelp.
  2. Alignment: You can now align the social icons just like any other Element.
  3. Vertical Spacing: This control is on other Elements and fields in the PDF Designer, but it allows you to control the spacing around the social icon itself. Play around with it to see how it works.

We made some changes within both tools to make them easier to use and a lot more understandable for newer users.

You’ll notice some new “Tool Tips” placed throughout the App Builder to help folks understand how things work. Sometimes there will be a question mark you hover over and sometimes you’ll just hover over the word or icon associated with the feature. Here is an example for Screen Conditions.

GoCanvas is really powerful, which makes it harder for folks to understand. So we have made changes to the More area under Field Settings.

  1. Mobile Visible: As mentioned above, we changed the name of this feature. Previously it was called “App Visible”. We wanted to more clearly call out that this impacts behavior on the mobile device.
  2. Place value in…: Previously these were all presented as separate choices. We wanted to group these together to help folks understand that the behavior for each is somewhat similar. You are placing the value entered in the field in the areas listed.
  3. PDF & Web Label: Previously this was called “Report Label”. No one really knew what the “report” was, though! The report is the PDF and the label would show up on the web view, too. So we wanted to make this clearer.

The Standard PDF is the default design that all GoCanvas Apps use initially (Although this has started to change, too!). Some of the controls in the App Builder impact behavior on that Standard PDF. Previously this was not clearly communicated to our users. It is even more confusing now that we have the PDF Designer.

So we created a new section under Field Settings called “Standard PDF”. Any controls in that section impact the Standard PDF ONLY. You will find this under any field that has controls that only impact the Standard PDF.

We moved the buttons that were previously on the top left up higher to create more space inside the editing area. The buttons are now on the right and are higher. You’ll also notice a very slight change to the “Add Screen” button.

You will also find some “Tool Tips” throughout the PDF Designer to help folks understand how things function.

We changed the buttons around to match what is now in the App Builder. These buttons are also found at the top right instead of the left.

And we moved the Auto Layout controls to the left side.
