The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which is different from basic sick leave, entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for specified family and medical reasons. This can include providing health care for a sick family member, taking family leave for a new child adoption or birth of a child, or other family medical leave reason covered by FMLA regulations. Once an FMLA leave request form has been submitted by an employee, the family leave response form should be completed and provided to employees within five business days. The FMLA form lets employees know that the FMLA request has been received, and notifies them of their FMLA rights and responsibilities and next steps in the process.
