Phlebotomy students have to learn about different blood collection procedures in order to be certified and work with patients.

The most important work they will need to learn is a basic blood draw. The test will involve knowing which phlebotomy equipment is needed including they type of needle (butterfly needle, for example), a tourniquet to identify a vein, sharps biohazard containers, blood culture bottles to send the specimen to the laboratory, gloves and other protective equipment, and alcohol swabs. Students will also need to fully understand the collection procedure for routine venipuncture as well as patient care and finding the vein to collect the specimen. Phlebotomy students will also need to learn how to address any complications that arise during the blood collection, such as iron overload, changes in the levels of white blood cells, and any other risk. The Phlebotomy Procedure app should be used by phlebotomy students at the learn about the basic procedure, protective equipment needed, how to manage any risk associated with the blood draw.
