Excavation and Trenching Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA)

When engaging in this work, employers must take precautions by developing protective systems, effectively training technicians, and monitoring conditions and equipment to ensure the utmost safety of workers. Safety guidelines and protocols for all activities related to excavation and trenching have been assembled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers which can be applied to promoting general workplace safety. This Excavation and Trenching - Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) app is an effective risk assessment tool aimed at helping to eliminate illness and injury to employees that could result from environmental conditions or practices at the excavation job site. The app guides the user through potential health and safety hazards in each of the principal steps of excavation and trenching and provides recommendations for mitigating these hazards. For example, users access controls for ensuring inspections, preventative maintenance and proper usage of all equipment, establishing work zones around equipment to protect personnel, and requiring personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and promote safety when dealing with underground utilities. With this app, employers can minimize the risks that are intrinsic to excavating and trenching and focus on maximizing the safety and health of all personnel on the job site.
