Substance abuse is a major problem in workplaces and can pose a danger to patients, clients, or co-workers. Maintaining a drug-free workplace is important to protect the well-being of a business and its personnel/customers and should be put in place by employers.

Having a proper procedure/employer guide to promote a drug-free workplace policy, can prevent alcohol and drug abuse from occurring by employees. Those aware of a testing program in place may be disinclined to engage in substance abuse. Please note that state law may vary between jurisdictions - some may allow for random drug testing, while others may eschew random testing in favor of reasonable suspicion testing. Additionally, testing process procedures may vary from state to state, and from company to company.

In the event an employee of a company is engaging in behaviors against company policy, are acting in a dangerous manner, or demonstrating appearance of being under the influence of alcohol or dugs such as marijuana, or other illegal drugs, an employer may issue a request for workplace drug testing. A request for a workplace drug test is part of a reasonable drug and alcohol policy and provides for a procedure for obtaining test results from a urine sample that is evaluated after being taken from a company's chosen collection site which may be on or off of company property.
