When a conveyor belt system is being cleaned or maintained, it is important for the conveyor belt cleaner, or maintenance personnel, to ensure clothing is not loose or torn, that materials have been removed from the belt, and that conveyor system is turned off and locked out. Cleaning should be done as a part of a preventive maintenance program - cleaning should include the tail pulley, the carrier and return rollers should be cleaned with a shovel or conveyor belt scraper, and guards/shields on the belt should be cleaned. Any spillage on the belt should be cleaned as well. Additionally, conveyor parts that need replacement should be replaced, or noted. If done properly, conveyor belt maintenance and cleaning can be done safely, and can increase the wear life of the conveyor system and the belt itself.
