ATTENTION BLOGGERS (or aspiring bloggers): Your blog might suck! Harsh, I know - but please let me explain.

Compelling content, intriguing opinions and insightful advice are all wonderful. However, none of them matter if you don't first address the most basic requirement for any piece of writing - READABILITY! If we can't read your masterful prose, what good is it? Let's review a few Dos and Don'ts of blogging:

Don'ts

Don't create a wall of text. Seriously - don't. It's the worst.

Don't make your background dark with white text. How much more annoying was reading this section because of it? As cool as you might think it looks, after a while it just hurts our eyes to read it.

Do's

1. Keep your sentences and paragraphs short and sweet.
Our attention spans are shortening every day. Say what you need to say as succinctly as possible and keep it moving.

2. Write as if you are in a conversation.
It feels more genuine and will engage your reader in a more powerful way.

3. Use clean and simple color schemes that include plenty of white space.
Please look at the above at the "Don'ts" section one more time if you still don't believe me.

4. Properly format your material to make it easily digestible.
Meaning, use things such a bullets, lists, and bold in an effective manner. It helps the whole process flow more smoothly.

The next time you find yourself ready to blog, be sure to keep these simple Dos and Don'ts in mind. The whole internet will thank you for it!
