The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has released their latest information on businesses breaking safety regulations. The scary part about the report is that many of the top violations remain unchanged from 2015, and 3 of the top 4 increased year over year.

TOP 4 WORKPLACE SAFETY VIOLATIONS IN 2016
Take a look at the newly reported results from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of where businesses are most failing to protect their workers.
FALL PROTECTION – 6,929 Violations – 3% Increase
- 5th year that Fall Protection has led to the most safety violations.
- $490 000 was the largest Fall Protection fine in 2015.
- Education and enforcement of fall protection equipment are essential to avoiding injury & fines.
HAZARD COMMUNICATION – 5,667 Violations – 9,3% Increase
- Lack of communication programs, not keeping safety records, and lack of adequate safety training led to the increase in violations.
- In excess of 3 million dollars worth of fines were issued.
- 485 more citations were issued in 2016 compared to 2015.
SCAFFOLDS – 3,906 Violations – 9,1% Decrease
- From 2015 to 2016, 389 fewer citations were issued to businesses by OSHA.
- Greater focus placed on proper assembly and preventative maintenance has reduced citations.
- 65% of personnel in the Construction industry interact with a scaffold regularly.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION – 3,585 Violations – 10,5% Increase
- 5 million workers in over 1.3 million businesses are required to wear respirators according to OSHA;
- Violations include lack of medical evals, not providing respiratory protection, not fit-testing, and not having a protection program;
- An Illinois construction company faces $2M in OSHA fines for exposing workers to asbestos.
